SITUATION: One instance comes straight to mind that happened during my last role as a TPM, where I had to recover a core project that was behind schedule.

The pressure was high from stakeholders, and morale on the team was low as we had lost a few key team members early on during the project.

TASK: I knew I had to get everyone on the same page and give them a sense of direction.

ACTION: So, I called a team meeting, listened to what they had to say, and acknowledged the problems and concerns everyone had. I also made sure to ask everyone for their input on how they felt they could best contribute to the project. Together, we changed our strategy, made goals that we could reach, and set up ways for people to communicate easily throughout the project. I adjusted the roadmap playing it everyone’s strengths to compensate for the gaps in the team, and made sure everyone felt like they had a critical part to play in the project’s success.

RESULT: Even though it wasn’t easy, seeing how hard the team worked made it all worth it. We worked tirelessly together, and in the end, not only did the project get back on track, but it also went above and beyond what was expected. It taught me that any problem can be solved with the right attitude, positive leadership skills, and a good team.”

The role of Technical Program Manager primarily involves overseeing multiple projects (or programs) with a common goal in mind, usually one with a clear commercial purpose. In order to complete the program on schedule and under budget, it takes a dedicated Technical Program Manager to oversee the efforts of many different teams. The Technical Program Manager is heavily involved throughout the entire program lifecycle, from setting the project’s objectives to achieving program completion. The role of Technical Program Manager is usually a senior position with good scope for career progression. Whilst salary will vary based on various factors, including location, company and experience, most Technical Program Managers can expect to earn a salary between £60,000 and £100,000 per year. In order to become a Technical Program Manager, employers will require candidates to hold a university degree in a relevant subject, for example, Computer Science or Business Management. Increasingly some employers will even expect a master’s degree.  

Key skills for a great Technical Program Manager:

Excellent communication skills – Working as a Technical Program Manager, you will collaborate with a variety of different departments on a daily basis. Due to the technical nature of the role, Technical Program Manager must be able to clearly convey specialised technical information for others who may be less familiar to understand in order to help to make the program a success!

Great specialised knowledge – Both business and technical knowledge are important for Technical Program Managers. Technical knowledge is particularly essential in order for Technical Program Managers to lead and support their team working on technical elements of the program, for example, coding.

Good written skills – Technical Program Managers must be able to successfully compile details plans, evaluations and reports on each Program they oversee.

Organisational skills – As Technical Program Managers are required to oversee an entire program as a whole, they must be highly organised. They must always stay on top of all aspects of the program and regularly meet with all teams working on elements of the program.

Leadership skills – Good Technical Program Managers must display strong leadership skills as they are responsible for overseeing an entire program that has many people from many different departments working on it.
