PASS THE POLICE VIDEO BASED ASSESSMENT IN 2024
WHAT IS THE POLICE VIDEO BASED ASSESSMENT
The Police video based assessment are short video exercises (2-3 minutes) which are used to assess your understanding of the Police values. You will be asked questions on how you believe the Police Officer(s) handled the given situation along with observational awareness questions.
You will not be allowed to take any notes during the videos that are played. Your task is to answer the questions as accurately as possible, based on what you remember from the video. So, your attention to detail is crucial here. You will be asked questions based on details from the scene, for example:
- What colour socks was the victim wearing?
- How many of the windows were closed?
- Which of the following items were missing?
All of the questions are multiple-choice based, and therefore will require careful consideration.
We have included for you below a number of tips and advice to help you prepare for and be successful with your video based assessment.
TIP 1 – PRACTICE YOUR OBSERVATIONAL & Memory SKILLS
Other than using the scenarios in this online resource, try to find other material to help you prepare for the observational part of the assessment. For example, we often tell candidates to ask a friend or family member to watch a piece of video, and create some questions based on what is included in the video such as:
- How many people were in the scene;
- Was there a tree in the scene;
- What colour was the house.
Once the questions have been created, you cab then watch the video and try to answer the questions. This will help to enhance your observational skills.
TIP 2 – STUDY AND UNDERSTAND THE COMPETENCIES AND VALUES
To have any chance of success with this exercise, it is vital that you have a solid understanding of the core competencies. We recommend you spend a large amount of time studying these, not only to ensure know what they are, but to understand when to use these, and which competencies you are being assessed against in any scenario or exercise.
SAMPLE POLICE VIDEO BASED ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Question 1
Was the conduct of the officer nearest to the camera acceptable? If not, what did he do or say that was unacceptable?
Question 2
Did the Police Officer have the right to confiscate the drinks?
Question 3
How would you have handled this situation?
Question 4
How many cans of drink did you see in the video clip?
Question 1
No, it was not. The officer was aggressive and risked aggravating the situation further by his behaviour. He also physically accosted one of the youths in order to take his drink – which was a bad choice.
Question 2
The Police Officer did have the right to confiscate the drinks as he suspected the youths to be underage and they were also unable to provide ID.
Question 3
I would have approached the youths in a calm and assertive way, asking them to provide their ID. I would not have threatened the youths or placed my hands on them. When they did not show their ID, I would have confiscated the drinks.
Question 4
3 cans of drink were visible in this clip.
THE UK POLICE OFFICER VIDEO BASED ASSESSMENT
The Police video based assessment is an additional assessment on top of the online assessment process used by some of the police services in the UK.
CURRENT CORE COMPETENCIES
Public service is essentially about acting with the best interests of the public in mind. The police are there to protect the public, and safeguard them from harm. Therefore, it’s important that your decisions are made with this aim in mind. You must be able to evaluate different strategies, how they will be of benefit to the wider public, and take responsibility to delivering upon these.
Openness to change is all about being able to adapt to new ways of working, and taking a flexible, positive approach to improvement and workplace change. The police are an innovative organisation, who are constantly updating their methods, and therefore it’s important that their staff can reflect this.
Service Delivery is all about the quality of your work and your output. You must show a good understanding of the police service’s aims and objectives, and in doing so present an organised, efficient and polite image to the public. It is essential that you are focused on the overall outcomes of the service, and can work quickly and accurately to achieve these.
As a police officer, your professionalism is absolutely integral. You are a representative of the police – a role model – and therefore it’s fundamental that you can present an honest and trustworthy approach to the public. By doing this, you can build confidence from the public in the police force, and deliver a far more
effective service.
You must be able to control your emotions when under high amounts of pressure, and exhibit strong levels of decision making. Police work is highly stressful, and will push you to your limits. Therefore, it’s vital that police employees can stay calm and collected, and manage their emotions.
Teamwork is a fundamental part of working as a police officer, and the better you can work as part of a collaborative unit, the better level of service you can provide to the public. Good police work is about building partnerships, not just with your colleagues, but with members of the public too.
NEW CORE COMPETENCIES
It’s very important for police officers to be emotionally aware. Not only do you need to be emotionally aware towards the needs and feelings of others, but you also need to be emotionally aware of yourself.
In order to work as a police officer, it’s vital that you can take ownership and responsibility, and hold yourself accountable for your own actions. Part of this means accepting that sometimes minor mistakes will happen, but the way you deal with these is what is important. You must learn from your mistakes, and seek improvement-based feedback.
When working as a police officer, and a representative of the service, you must be polite and respectful with every person that you meet, and show that the police value the ideals of teamwork, collaboration and social unity. Remember that police officers are role models within society!
Police officers must show an understanding of how their behaviour impacts on the reputation of the service, and strive to make a positive contribution to this at all times. You must be focused on helping your teammates to achieve high standards, whilst maintaining your own.
As a police officer, your analytical skills are crucial. You must be able to apply these, and take an evidence based approach. This means using the evidence available to you effectively and efficiently, to gather as many facts and hard info as possible, before using this data in the most logical way.
Not everything is straightforward and ‘by the book’. There will always be problems which require an innovative and creative solution, and it’s your job to come up with this! Furthermore, it’s essential that you can take an open mind to new ways of working, and understand that continuous development is a necessity for any
police officer.
