I am 65. I sat the 11 plus in 1964 in West Hartlepool. My junior school was streamed all four years – 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, etc. The B stream was called “Remove” and combined 3B and 4B. So, in effect, I was in the same class for 2 years. One day in Remove year 2, I noticed some interesting work on the blackboard in 4A’s classroom. Strange, unfamiliar symbols and shapes, i.e. non-verbal reasoning tasks. Preparation for the test. I’d never seen them before and never saw them again until the day came to sit down and do the 11plus. All the boys in 4A “passed” for either to the Grammar School or the Technical High. I was to go to Dyke House sec mod, which I dreaded. Like a borstal, I’d heard. Noticing my downcast look in class, my teacher, a good one, too tried to cheer me with, “Don’t worry, Evans. It’s not the end of the world. ” But, of course, it was to me after all the build-up at home and school. Two elder sisters and a brother all “passed for the grammar schools. Luckily, I was awarded a “late pass” during the summer. I went on to university and I am now myself a teacher. I have always abhorred the 11 plus. Socially divisive, educationally unfounded and pedagogically unnecessary.
