TRAIN DRIVER VIGILANCE TEST
Train drivers are required to possess the necessary physical and psychological fitness in order to meet the operational and safety standards that are determined by the Train Operating Companies within the UK. In order to assess the relevant fitness of the train drivers, TOC’s will utilise the requirements set by the European Licence for Train Drivers.
The Vigilance test is just one of many different psychometric tests that have been introduced recently by the assessing bodies. The test will go some way to determining your ability to operate in a safe and competent manner.
ABOUT THE TRAIN DRIVER TESTS AND HOW THEY HAVE IMPROVED
The tests used were changed in order to meet the requirements of the Third Railway Package for the European Licence for Train Drivers (Directive 2007/59/EC). The reason for the change was to maintain and improve the high standards of safety within the rail industry. Because train drivers carry out such an important role, and are responsible for the safety of rolling stock and passengers, the tests were changed. The tests now include:

- Memory Ability
- Dot concentration test
- Reasoning Ability
- Attention and Recognition Test (AART)
- Hand coordination
- Written Communication Test (WCT)
- Multimodal Interview (MMI)
The tests have set high standards within the train driver selection process and in particular the assessment of railway personnel.
