ROYAL MARINES TESTS
As part of the Royal Marines Commando selection process you will be required to pass what is called a ‘Recruiting Test’. This includes the following assessments:
- Reasoning test;
- Verbal Ability test;
- Numerical Reasoning test;
- Mechanical Comprehension test.

ROYAL MARINES SELECTION PROCESS
As part of the Royal Marines selection process you will be required to sit a Recruiting Test. The test forms part of the overall Royal Navy Recruiting test and consists of the following key four areas:
- A reasoning test to assess your ability to reason with words and number.
- A verbal ability test to assess your ability to reason with the written word.
- A numeracy test to assess your numerical skill.
- A mechanical reasoning test to assess your practical understanding of shapes.
The Royal Marines tests are usually carried out at the Royal Marines Armed Forces Careers Office and will be under strict timed conditions. Details of the time restrictions and number of questions per exercise will be provided in your recruitment literature.

The selection process for becoming a Royal Marines Commando consists of the following elements:
CONTACT THE CAREERS ADVISORS
The first step in your pursuit to joining the Royal Marines is to contact your local Royal Navy careers office.
ARMED FORCES CAREERS OFFICE VISIT
Your initial meeting with the Royal Marines Careers Advisor is as important as any other and it is an opportunity for you to create a positive impression.
APTITUDE TEST
The aptitude test is designed to assess your ability to work effectively with language, numbers, reasoning and mechanical comprehension.
INTERVIEW AND MEDICAL CHECK
During the selection process you will be interviewed both at the Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) and also during the PRMC. They will want to know why you want to become a Royal Marines Commando, what you have done to find out about the service, and how you think you will cope with the training. Once you have passed the interview you will need to undertake a medical check to make sure that you are in good health.
PRE-JOINING FITNESS TEST (PJFT)
The majority of candidates who fail the Potential Royal Marines Course (PRMC) do so during the 3-mile run. Therefore, the Royal Marines want to be sure that you
can pass this prior to sending you off to PRMC. The PJFT consists of two 2.4km runs; the first run to be completed within 12mins 30secs, the second run, to be best effort, but within 10mins 30secs, with a minute rest in between the two runs. The runs are to be conducted on a 2 degree inclination on the running machine.
THE POTENTIAL ROYAL MARINES COURSE (PRMC)
The Potential Royal Marines Course lasts for 2½ days, during which time you will be assessed in the gym; on the assault course; on a 3-mile run; during an interview and in the classroom.
