ONLINE ROYAL NAVY RECRUITING TEST QUESTIONS
As part of the Royal Navy selection process you will be required to pass the Royal Navy Recruiting Test.
The test covers the following psychometric assessments:
✔ A reasoning test;
✔ A verbal ability test;
✔ A numeracy test;
✔ A mechanical reasoning test.
HOW TO PASS THE ROYAL NAVY RECRUITING TEST
The tests are usually carried out at the Armed Forces Careers Office and will be under strict timed conditions. Details of the time restrictions and number of questions per exercise will be provided in your recruitment literature.
The most effective way to prepare for the Royal Navy tests is to practice lots of sample psychometric test questions over a prolonged period of time. The majority of candidates will cram in their preparation the night before the test. We strongly advise against this. Use an action plan in order to build in plenty of targeted practice time.
During the actual Recruiting Test you will have a set amount of time in which to answer the questions and there will be a number of options to choose from. The tests are usually multiple choice in nature so if you find that you are running out of time towards the end of the test, take a guess!
You have one in five chance of getting it correct. You will not lose any marks for incorrect answers.
THE ROYAL NAVY TEST (RT) CONSISTS OF 4 TIMED MULTIPLE-CHOICE APTITUDE TESTS AS FOLLOWS:
PART 1 – REASONING TEST
Reasoning skills are assessed to determine a candidate’s ability to process information and recognise underlying patterns and configurations amongst a set of words, shapes or sequences.
PART 2 – VERBAL ABILITY
Verbal Ability is a test used to assess a candidate’s ability to recognise relationships between words and sentences.
Typical questions in relation to Verbal Ability include: completing the sentence, rephrasing sentences, grouping words, word discrepancies and so forth. This assessment is used to determine how well a candidate can quickly and effectively work through verbal formats, and demonstrate high levels of literary and verbal understanding.
PART 3 – NUMERICAL REASONING
The Numerical Reasoning part of your Royal Navy Recruit test is to assess a candidate’s ability to make accurate calculations using basic mathematical formulas including:
- Addition
- Subtraction
- Multiplication
- Division
- Percentages
- Decimal
- Fractions
- Algebra
- Area
- Perimeter
- Significant figure
- Graphs and Charts
PART 4 – MECHANICAL COMPREHENSION
Mechanical Comprehension tests are an assessment that measures an individual’s ability to understand mechanical concepts. The tests are usually multiple-choice in nature and present simple, frequently encountered mechanisms and technical situations. The majority of Mechanical Comprehension tests require a working knowledge of basic mechanical operations and the application of physical laws.
TOP TIPS
Get a good night’s sleep
In the build up to the Royal Navy test get plenty of good quality sleep. If you are feeling tired and grouchy on the day of your test then you will not perform to your optimum ability.
Don’t give up
If you think you’ve performed poorly on a particular test try to put it behind you. The Recruiting Test is just one part of the entire Royal Navy selection process and you may be able to gain better scores in the other testing areas.
Special requirements
If you have any special needs such as dyslexia or otherwise then be sure to inform the recruiting officer at the AFCO beforehand. They should give you more time during the test.
Speed
Work quickly through each of the test questions and do not spend too much time on one particular question. Let’s assume that you have 15 minutes in which to answer 30 questions. On average this equates to 30 seconds per question.

To help you get a better understanding of the Royal Navy recruiting test, let’s take a quick look at a few sample questions.
Reasoning skills are assessed to determine a candidate’s ability to process information and recognise underlying patterns and configurations amongst a set of words, shapes or sequences.
EXAMPLE
Look at how the figure changes from box 1 to box 2. Apply the same changes in order to get the correct answer.
EXAMPLE
In the sentence, the word outside the brackets will only go with three of the words inside the brackets in order to make a longer word. Which ONE word will it NOT go with?
For these types of questions, you need to determine what words in the answer box fits with the word outside the brackets. Note, for these questions, the word needs to make one complete word i.e. downsize.
The Numerical Reasoning part of your Royal Navy Recruit test is to assess a candidate’s ability to make accurate calculations using basic mathematical formulas including:
We suggest that you practice as many different types of mathematical questions as you can prior to your assessment.
EXAMPLE
The CROSS looks like a multiplication sign and it tells you which numbers to multiply together.
One arm is saying ‘multiply the 5 by the 5’, and the other arm is saying ‘multiply the 7 by the 3’.
The BOW says ‘multiply the 2 numbers I am pointing at’. That is 7 times 5.
The answer is 35 and it goes underneath the line in the answer.
EXAMPLE
A lever consists of a bar which is balanced on a fixed point, known as the fulcrum. If you needed to lift the weight, you need to work out how to calculate the force needed.
F = (weight x distance from fulcrum to weight) ÷ distance from fulcrum to point where force is being applied.
F = (80 x 9) ÷ 12
F = 720 ÷ 12
F = 60 lbs
