Massage is the treatment and practice of manipulation of the soft body tissues with physical, medical/therapeutic, and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. The word comes from the French massage “friction of kneading”. Massage involves acting on and manipulating the patient’s body with pressure, tension and motion by manual means. Target tissues during massage may include; muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, and/or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, forearm, and even feet.
In professional settings massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting in a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor. The massage subject may be fully or partly unclothed. Parts of the body may be covered with towels or sheets.
Developing a rewarding massage therapy career can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Most successful massage therapists reach a good practice level within two years, though some can take longer. If you are to be a successful massage therapist you should focus on a number of important elements such as:
- Study your trade professionally.
- Strive for quality work with each client.
- Understand your ambition and goals.
- Maintain positive energy levels.
- Value your local reputation > word of mouth can increase your clientele.
- Have a warm and friendly personality.
3 Top Massage Therapist Tips
Massage oil decreases the friction created on the skin and prevents the pulling of hairs. Don’t use too much: the less oil, the greater the friction and the deeper the pressure. Warm the massage oil in your hands, and apply a modest amount with whole hand. Use the whole surface of both hands. Stroke reasonably firmly upwards from the lower back all the way up to the neck, then (gentler pressure), circle around and back to the lower back region (5 to 10 minutes).
Use slower movements for a soothing or calming response. There is a smaller area of contact, so the pressure is deeper. Both hands work in circles – start at the lower back. Move in a circle, first outward, then upward and return to the center. Gradually progress to the upper back. By learning to use the correct hand technique you will increase the effectiveness of your massage whilst also preserving essential energy levels.
When applying pressure with finger or thumb, provide support with the other fingers and thumbs. Otherwise you will wear out your thumbs. This DVD set will teach you how to massage effectively so that you look after your hands correctly which will in turn allow you to go on working as a massage therapist for many years!
