HOW TO BECOME AN ARMY OFFICER

If you want to pass the recruitment process at the very first attempt, this online insider guide and interview video resource will show you how.

From essential planning exercise advice through to actual interview questions with each of the Board Officers we cover the entire selection process to be selected as an officer in the British Army.

To begin with, applicants will need to contact their local Armed Forces Careers Office and explain that they wish to apply to become an Officer within the British Army. The most effective way to do this is to go along to your nearest centre for a brief chat. You will be supplied with an information pack and details on how to apply, providing you meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

The Army Officer Selection Process

The selection process to join the Army as an officer will normally consist of the following elements:

online application

Stage 1 – ONLINE REGISTRATION & APPLICATION

The first step on your route to become an officer in the British Army is to register your interest online, or by contacting your local Armed Forces Careers Office. There you will be required to fill out some basic information, learn about life in the army and if you wish to proceed you can then submit an online application.

Joining the Army is a very big decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. You will need to consider your choice of career carefully and will be required to complete a short questionnaire that will determine your suitability for joining.

Stage 2 – The AOSB suitability interview

The next stage in the application process to join the army as an officer is the suitability interview or AFCO interview. Usually held at the armed forces careers office, but due to current COVID-19 restrictions the interview is online.

The purpose of this interview is to assess your potential to Jon the army as an officer.

You will also have the opportunity to ask about the life in the army to help you decide whether life in the army is for you.

Stage 3 – THE AOSB briefing

The AOSB briefing is 24 hours in duration and held in Westbury. During your stay here you will be assessed on:

  1. Your physical ability
  2. Practical ability
  3. Teamwork ability
  4. Leadership ability

The briefing is also an opportunity for you to see whether Army life is for you and to also prepare for the full AOSB Main Board.

Further purpose of the briefing is also to give you an idea on what to expect at the main board as many of the exercises are repeated at main board.

Stage 4 – AOSB – MAIN BOARD

The AOSB Main Board takes place at Westbury and lasts for three and a half days. Boards usually run during the week, however, there are weekend boards for those people who cannot genuinely attend during the week.

You will be split up into medium sized groups of approximately 8 people. This is done deliberately to assess whether or not you can work with people of the opposite sex and also with people whom are younger and older than you.

The AOSB Main Board is designed to assess whether or not you have the right personal qualities and attributes to become a successful officer in the army The only way you will pass it is through hard work and determination

How to Become an Officer In The British Army: Commonly Asked Questions

In order to apply directly for an officer role in the British Army, you will need a minimum of two A-Levels or equivalent. However, there are a number of different routes you can take when applying.  If you do not have A-Levels, but you have a good level of GCSEs, you can apply for a Bursary or scholarship, and after you finish university, you will start your career in the army at the training academy at Sandhurst. You can also join at a later age up to 50 years old, if you have a professional qualification which the army requires. Common roles include doctors, dentists, and other specialist roles. Another possible entrance is via Welbeck Defence 6thForm College. As standard you will need to have a good level of GCSEs with at least 1 grade A and 1 grade B.

The whole process should take around 6-9 months from submitting your application to starting your officer training at Sandhurst.

In order to become an Officer in the British Army, it is required for you to be between 17 years 9 months and 28 years and 11 months. The first step is to fill out an online application or visit your local Armed Forces careers office. If you are eligible to join you will be invited to attend an interview at your local AFCO, or this may be online. The purpose of this interview is for the army to learn more about you and your motivations for applying to join the Army as an officer.

If after this stage the army think you have the potential to be an officer in the British Army, you will put forward for AOSB Briefing and Main Board. The briefing is just a taste of what to expect at the main board and you will get the opportunity to take part in a number of tests and exercises which you will be assessed upon at main board. The main board is where you will be fully assessed on a number of difficult physical and mental challenges, which will focus on your fitness, leadership potential, planning skills and much more.

Last steps will be background and reference checks and you will then be given your starting date depending on the role you are applying for.

Officer pay increases with rank. Please see below starting salary for all of the officer ranks within the British Army:

  • Officer cadets: £27,818 per annum
  • 2nd Lieutenant: £33,426 per annum
  • Lieutenant: £34,610 per annum
  • Captain: £42,849 per annum
  • Major: £53,975 per annum

It is possible to become an officer without a degree, but you will be required to have a good level of academic knowledge including A-Levels if you are applying for a direct entry role for the British Army. It is possible to join with GCSEs but you would be required to go through a Bursary or Scholarship route, or via a 6th form college such as Welbeck. Each of these will have their own entry requirements, so please research these carefully to find the best option for you. You can also join as an officer if you have a professional qualifications or trades which the army requires.

Become an Army Officer – Further Information

(CLICK THE BELOW TITLES TO CHANGE TABS)

Suitability Interview

  • You will be invited to attend what is called the Army Careers Advisor (ACA) interview. Sometimes this interview is referred to as the AFCO interview or the ‘filter’ interview.
  • This interview is designed to assess whether or not you have the right qualities to become an officer and it is also the opportunity for you to decide whether or not the Army is for you.
  • If you successfully pass the ACA interview and a medical check, you will be put forward to attend the AOSB briefing.
  • In order to successfully join the army as an officer you will need to pass two boards. The first is an AOSB briefing and the second is the Main Board.

AOSB – Briefing

The AOSB briefing will consist of a number of different activities and exercises which will help to get a feel of what to expect at main board. Please note, although the exercises are used to give a taster to what to expect you are still assessed whether you are suitable for an a career as an officer in the British Army.

  • An opening discussion with the other candidates. Your group leader will give you a current affairs subject to discuss with other members of your group.
  • Aptitude tests – verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and abstract reasoning
  • Planning exercise Practical techniques
  • Physical fitness tests including the bleep test and an obstacle course

Once the briefing is complete the assessors will get together and discuss your performance.

You will be placed in one of the four categories:

CATEGORY 1 – Invited to attend the AOSB Main Board.

CATEGORY 2 – You will be invited to attend AOSB Main Board after a set period of time during which you will be required to work on your weaker areas.

CATEGORY 3 – The board believes that you will fail Main Board. However, you can attend if you wish to do so.

CATEGORY 4 – Unsuitable for AOSB Main Board.

As you can see, it is important to aim for CATEGORY 1 or CATEGORY 2 at the very least. If you achieve CATEGORY 1 then you will normally be invited back to Westbury within 8 weeks. During this 8-week period it is vital that you continue your preparation. Passing the briefing is by no means an indication that you will pass the Main Board.

AOSB Main Board

  • The AOSB Main Board takes place at Westbury. Boards usually run during the week, however, there are weekend boards for those people who cannot genuinely attend during the week.
  • You will be split up into medium sized groups of approximately 8 people for the duration of the board. Groups will consist of men and women of a variety of different ages.
  • This is done deliberately, to assess whether or not you can work with people of the opposite sex and also with people whom are younger and older than you.

The AOSB Main Board is designed to assess whether or not you have the right personal qualities and attributes to be successful. The only way you will pass it is through hard work and determination.

There are 2 key elements to passing the AOSB:

1) How to perform

2) How you behave

  • You will be required to work in groups of up to 8 people.
  • How you treat each member of your group, both as a team player and a team leader will be assessed.
  • You will also be assessed on your attitude. If you are cocky, arrogant, dismissive, or you have a negative attitude towards discipline, then you will not pass the board.

The assessors will naturally expect you to have found out as much as you can about the Army, its history, its mission, its equipment, weapons, tanks and aircraft, and they will also ask you questions about the training you would expect to go through if you are successful both as an officer and as part of your chosen trade/branch. There is plenty of hard work ahead of you if you want to pass the AOSB Main Board, but the hard work will certainly be worth it!

British Army Officer: Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB)

If you passed the previous stages of the selection process and reached this stage, you will be invited to attend the AOSB which takes place at Westbury. You will be assessed on different elements which will assess your mental and physical abilities. The assessment is residential and you will be assessed over three and a half days of physical and mental activities, which we have broken down for you below:

Fitness Assessments

You will be required to undertake a number of physical assessments which include the following:

  • A multi-stage fitness test, more commonly known as the bleep test. This is not a pass or fail test, but you need to put in maximum effort and your performance will be graded. We strongly advise that you are capable of reaching at least level 10 of the bleep test.
  • An individual obstacle course. This will be similar to the obstacle course you would have undertaken during AOSB briefing, but further elements will be added.
  • Sit-ups and press-ups in an endurance assessment.
  • Opening and closing races. These are group physical exercises which assess your team working and leadership abilities against other groups in the AOSB.

Psychometric Assessments

You will have to undertake a number of psychometric assessments which you would have also faced at the briefing. However, there will also be some further assessment tests.

  • An essay based assessment which will focus on your general knowledge and current affairs knowledge
  • A memory test
  • A personality test
  • Verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract reasoning tests.
  • Give a presentation to the group regarding a topic you have chosen. With a questions and answer session at the end.

Interviews

During the main board you will have to sit a number of interviews. These will be with Deputy President, the Vice President of the board and the education advisor

  • You will be asked a number of questions about your self your background your education etc.
  • One of the further interviews will focus on your motivations for wanting to join the the army.

Group Exercises

The purpose of this assessment is to test your teamwork abilities. This exercise will also test your resilience and assess your strengths. The outdoors tasks itself  will involve you taking part in group tasks which involves you moving from A to B using various objects to assist you. You would have had practice sessions for this during AOSB briefing.

Tips For Passing The Group Exercises

  • Be very supportive of the team.
  • Be in control.
  • Acknowledge other’s suggestions.
  • Don’t panic. It is OK to ask for suggestions.
  • Think outside of the box. If an object provided is of no use to you, don’t use it!

The Planning Exercise

During the planning exercise you are given a written brief containing the details of a fictitious scenario, which you will be given 15 minutes to study. They will then introduce a problem into the scenario setting which you will need to solve. You have 15 minutes to discuss possible solutions with your group and reach an agreed plan. Once the time is up you will present your plan to the Board. The difficulty comes when each person in the group is questioned in turn to examine their grasp of the situation. It is essential that you are able to answer any questions that are thrown at you. We also recommend you become conversant in the use of Speed, Distance and Time calculations both in written format and also by solving them in your head without the aid of pen, paper or a calculator.

  • Read the scenario thoroughly! Don’t skim through it.
  • Be vocal and active during the group discussion stage.
  • Explain your point of view and why your plan works.
  • Don’t dismiss others comments directly out of hand.
  • Practice by carrying out SDT questions, but also get someone to fire questions at you in the build up to the AOSB.

Outdoor Command Task

The purpose of this assessment is to test your leadership and teamwork abilities. This exercise will also test your resilience and assess your strengths. The outdoors tasks itself will involve you taking part in group tasks which involves you moving from A to B using various objects to assist you. Each member of the group will have the opportunity to command the task. You would have undertaken similar exercises during the briefing, but the main board command tasks will have added complexity.

Tips For Passing The Command Task

  • Be very supportive of the team.
  • Be in control. Show encouragement to other members of the team.
  • Acknowledge other’s suggestions.
  • Don’t panic. It is OK to ask for suggestions.
  • Think outside of the box. If an object provided is of no use to you, don’t use it!
