OK, to begin with, WHY the hiring manager will ask you the interview question, “describe yourself in three words”.

The hiring manager will ask you the question, describe yourself in 3 words for two reasons.

REASON #1. They want to assess whether you know yourself and your strengths. If you sit there in the interview and try to think of 3 words that best describe you, it means you are not self-aware.

REASON #2. Why they will ask the question, describe yourself in 3 words is because they want to assess which one candidate is going to fit into their team quickly and give the company the greatest return from their salary.

The following 12 words will impress the hiring manager, and all you have to do is choose the 3 words that best describe you.

Dedicated

Being dedicated means you are committed to achieving goals and putting in the necessary effort to see projects through to completion.

Resourceful

This means you are skilled at finding quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties or solve problems.

Dependable

If you are dependable, it means you are reliable and trustworthy, and consistently meet important deadlines while fulfilling your responsibilities.

Proactive

A proactive employee will take the initiative to anticipate and address potential issues before they become real problems.

Collaborative

A collaborative employee enjoys working with others and contributing to a team effort to achieve common goals. When you collaborate with people, it means that you work very closely to achieve the team’s objective. Saying you are ‘collaborative’ is much better than ‘team worker’!

Innovative

If you are innovative, it means you are creative and able to generate new ideas to improve processes or increase sales for the company.

Adaptable

An adaptable employee is great to have in a company because they embrace change, adjust to new conditions, environments, or challenges with ease, and they will willingly carry out tasks outside the scope of their job description.

Detail-Oriented

Someone that is detail-oriented rarely makes mistakes. They are very attentive to details, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks.

Results-Driven

A results-driven employee will be focused on achieving desired outcomes and driven by the pursuit of success. They are always working towards their goals, and they never stop growing!

Resilient

Resilient employees are vital in any team because they recover quickly from setbacks and remain persistent in the face of challenges.

Self-Disciplined

Some of the best employees are self-disciplined. If you are self-disciplined, it means that you organise your work against the team’s objectives, can be relied on to get things done on time, never complain, and you need minimal supervision.

Industrious

This is one of my most favourite words to use when describing yourself in an interview. If you are industrious, it means you work very hard, are constantly busy, and you take action to achieve great things in your work.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS (Answer #1)

“I would describe myself as SELF-DISCIPLINED, DEDICATED and RESOURCEFUL. I am self-disciplined, meaning I will prioritise work based on your commercial goals and get all tasks completed on time without supervision. I am dedicated and will be committed to your company for the long term. This means you won’t have to readvertise the position for many years. Finally, because I am resourceful, I will find smart and clever ways to overcome challenges and seek ways to grow the business using the resources available.”

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS (Answer #2)

“In three words, I would describe myself as COMMERCIALLY-FOCUSED, RESPONSIVE, and COLLABORATIVE. I am commercially-focused, meaning I understand in basic terms how a business operates and that I must give you a great return on my salary. I am responsive, meaning I will act quickly and get more work completed than the average employee. Finally, I am collaborative, meaning I will work closely with my co-workers and company departments to quickly complete tasks and projects and ensure the company becomes a market leader.”
