AIRLINE PILOT PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING – SAMPLE TEST QUESTIONS FOR YOUR PREPARATION
Includes sample test questions plus over 400 pages of downloadable testing guides and resources, all of which are perfect for your assessment preparation.
During nearly every airline selection process these days you will be required to complete several psychometric tests. As a current serving pilot I recommend you undertake the tests that are available at the bottom of this page during your preparation for the airline pilot psychometric testing assessment.
To begin with however, having personally successfully passed the tests it is important that I provide you with some useful information on how to tackle them.
WHAT ARE AIRLINE PILOT PSYCHOMETRIC TESTS
Psychometric tests comprise: ability tests and personality tests and are a measure of general intelligence, attainment, aptitude, personality, attitudes, interests, values and motivators. They assess you against the airline pilot job requirements in terms of knowledge, skills, experience and personality.
ABOUT THE PSYCHOMETRIC TESTS
THERE ARE OVER FIFTY HUMAN ABILITIES, WHICH FALL INTO FOUR CATEGORIES:
- Cognition (verbal or numerical reasoning)
- Psychomotor (hand-eye co-ordination)
- Sensory (hearing, touch, taste, smell, sight)
- Physical (stamina and strength)
THE MAIN TESTS MEASURE COGNITIVE REASONING AND ARE TYPICALLY:
- Verbal
- Numerical
- Perceptual
- Spatial
- Abstract
- Mechanical
In order to get a feel for the types of test you will undergo, please see below an overview of each type of test.
verbal reasoning
Verbal reasoning tests have been in use for many years as a tool by employers whilst assessing potential employees for specific careers. During my research, and whilst discussing this type of test with test administrators, we established that the most common type of verbal reasoning test in use today is the one that involves a passage of text and a requirement for the candidate to state whether certain statements relating to the passage are, being either: True, False or impossible to say. There are other variations, such as odd one out, missing words, and many more.
NUMERICAL REASONING
A Numerical Reasoning Test is designed to assess mathematical knowledge through number-related assessments. These assessments can be of different difficulty levels, and will all vary depending on who you are sitting the test for. So, be sure to find out what type of Numerical Reasoning Test you will be sitting, to ensure you are fully able to practice prior to the assessment.
Numerical Reasoning Tests cover a wide range of mathematical formulas; and so it is imperative to comprehend the skills and knowledge required to work out the mathematics involved.
fuel calculation test
Fuel calculation questions are used in everyday life, from calculating how much gas you use in your own home to calculating the fuel required to launch a space shuttle into space. It is important that the people whose job it is to carry out these calculations do them confidently and correctly as a mistake could mean that an aircraft may not reach its destination because it does not have enough fuel remaining, for example.
You are reading this now because you need to practice how to solve fuel calculation questions. The reality is that there are procedures and methods to solving these types of questions.
SPATIAL REASONING
Spatial reasoning tests are widely used during selection processes which require an ability to use practical and visual skills.
They are more common in jobs such as engineering and driving roles but are also more and more being utilised on medical and science roles.
Spatial reasoning, or ability as it is sometimes called, involves the candidate visualising and then manipulating different complex shapes and patterns.
ABSTRACT REASONING
Abstract Reasoning tests are designed to assess your ability to identify patterns amongst abstract shapes where irrelevant and distracting material will often lead to incorrect assumptions and answers.
The test, therefore, measures your ability to change track, critically evaluate and generate hypotheses and requires you to query judgements as you go along. This comprehensive testing manual provides you with sample test questions that are similar to the real test.
It has proven that your ability in this type of test can be greatly improved with targeted practice. This book will provide you with dozens of sample test questions and answers to help you prepare thoroughly for the tests.
