‘I am a person who feels comfortable with making important decisions.’

HOW TO PASS THE POLICE BEHAVIOURAL STYLES QUESTIONNAIRE – Suitable for the 2016 & 2024 CVF

To be successful in this assessment you will need to be able to demonstrate the skills, values and competencies required to become a police officer in your responses.

Do not get fooled when they tell you there are no wrong answers. This is certainly not the case. If you answer statements which do not comply with what is expected of the behaviours of a police officer then you are unlikely to pass the assessment.

What you need to do to pass this assessment is to completely understand the Competencies and Values Framework and be able to demonstrate your knowledge of these in your responses. When answering the questions, you should apply a simple three-step process:

  1. Read the statement;
  2. Understand which competency or value the question relates to;
  3. Answer the question with an appropriate response which matches the correct behaviour.

The Competencies and Values Framework

The competencies and values used for the police selection process are the same beliefs and behaviours expected of all those policing. These include the six core competencies:

  • Emotionally aware
  • Innovative & open-minded
  • Analyse critically
  • Deliver, support, & inspire
  • Collaborative
  • Take ownership

And the four core values:

  • Transparency
  • Public service
  • Integrity
  • Impartiality

As you are probably aware the College of Policing have introduced a new version of the CVF which has removed the clusters and mainly modified the Values. The competencies for the most part remain the same. The new 2024 CVF values consist of:

  • Courage
  • Respect and Empathy
  • Public Service.

The older values of Integrity, impartiality and transparency have been removed, bu their associated behaviours have been incorporated into the new values.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE POLICE BEHAVIOURAL STYLES QUESTIONNAIRE

Of course, reading and memorising the police Values and Competencies is a completely appropriate method to prepare for the Police selection process.

However, practising answering example questions similar to that used in the actual police behavioural questionnaire may be a better option. If you practise a lot of behavioural questionnaire questions, the values and competencies and how you need to match them with your own will ultimately become second nature. This will come in handy when you undertake your police behavioural questionnaire.

Explanation: This question relates to the competencies of Analyse Critically and Taking Ownership. As a police officer, you will be required to make decisions every day. However, any decision you make should be analysed to ensure that they conform with policy, procedures, and the police code of ethics. You should also weigh up the pros and cons of any potential decision and the associated risks. By making a decision, you are also taking ownership of the situation and responsibility for any actions.

‘I prefer to work things out for myself, if I am struggling with something.’

A. Completely Disagree

B. Strongly Disagree

C. Somewhat Disagree

EXPLANATION: This relates to the competency we are emotionally aware.

Depending on the circumstance you should seek support. If your problem-solving skills can solve the problem without asking for help, ten this is acceptable. However, during your career, you will come across a number of challenges where you will need the support of others. These could be emotional issues related to your tasks or what you have experienced. In this case you should always seek help and support from the facilities available to you.

‘I can’t imagine a situation where I would go against what I believe.’

A. Completely Disagree

B. Strongly Disagree

C. Somewhat Disagree

D. Neither Agree nor Disagree
