In the case of the Civil Service, your interview answers will be scored against the competencies, behaviours and strengths for the role you are applying for. The Civil Service will be looking for a candidate who fits their criteria as opposed to generic answers.
When preparing your answers you must tailor them for the role you are applying for. If you are to be successful then your interview answers must demonstrate the success profiles and values of the Civil Service. Below is a Strengths to Behaviours mapping & the values that you will need to demonstrate in your answers:

You should include, where possible, as many of these in your interview answers. You don’t need to necessarily mention them by name, but instead you should be demonstrating you have those skills, attributes, and values within your answers. This is critical to your success in the Civil Service interview.
Be sure to get yourself a copy of the Civil Service Behaviours and also the Strengths. Each Behaviour is linked to a Civil Service Strength. Essentially, you will be assessed against the Behaviours and Strengths in your interview. It is therefore imperative that you study these in details and learn how to apply the relevant Strengths to the Behaviours you are being scored against to the role level you are applying for.
You will be asked behavioural and competency-based interview questions such as “Tell Me About a Time When…” or “Describe a Situation When…”. Make sure you prepare by coming up with strong situations you can use as examples that match the Behaviours and Strengths.
Conduct thorough research on the department you are applying for that you can then demonstrate within your interview. Impress the interview panel by mentioning a recent achievement they have made that you noticed on their social channels. Make sure you also know the departments long-term goals.
Download and print off a copy of the job description. Go through the job description and highlight any keywords, skills, attributes, and qualities they are looking for. You then need to demonstrate these in your interview answers. For example, if they are stating in the job advert that they want someone who is “adaptable to change” then you need to state this or demonstrate a tie when you have been open and adaptable to change in one of your interview answers.
When answering behavioural and competency-based questions you need to use the STAR technique. This stands for:
Situation – provide context of a challenging situation that matches the question asked.
Task – what was the challenge/task that needed to be overcome and why/what was its importance?
Action – detail the action you carried out to try and overcome the challenge.
Result – what was the outcome? What did you achieve?
TIP – always ensure that the result is positive and shines you in a good light!
