PREPARING FOR THE 11 PLUS

Below I have provided some top tips for parents and children when revising for their 11 plus maths assessment. 11 plus 1 Allow for plenty of study breaks – even if they’re 5 or 10 minutes long. This will help to refresh the memory and keep your child calm and focused. KEEP IN MIND – a child’s attention rate is usually between 30 to 50 minutes. 11 plus 2 Active revision is a great way to stay interactive with the topic. Revision games and mock tests are great exam techniques to use to prepare for the 11+. Visual aids are another great way to take in lots of information. Mind maps, spider diagrams, flash cards, posters etc. should all be used in preparation. 11 plus 3 Stick a piece of paper up on the fridge highlighting all of the areas you wish to cover. 11 plus 4 Mnemonic devices are a great way to remember things. The more personalised they are, the more memorable they will be. 11 plus 5 Practice past papers! This is the best way to revise! Not only does it allow your child to practice questions, but you can always work on exam structure and timed conditions. 11 plus 6 Work on speed as well as accuracy. Exams are set under time limits, and therefore the paper needs to be completed in the allotted time. 11 plus 7 Make sure your child is receiving plenty of exercise and nutritious food to keep their brain working effectively! Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before the 11+ test. Your child needs to be feeling refreshed and ready to sit the test. Eat a healthy breakfast on the day of the test. 11 plus 8 Reassure your child, and tell them how proud you are of the efforts that they have made. Focus on the revision as opposed to the long-term goal.
