To begin with, applicants will need to contact their local Armed Forces Careers Office (AFCO) and explain that they wish to apply to become a RAF Officer.
The most effective way to do this is to go along to your nearest centre for a brief chat. You will be supplied with an information pack and details on how to apply, providing you meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
One of the first stages of the selection process involves a filter interview, which will be held at the Armed Forces Careers Office. This interview will assess your desire to become an officer in the RAF and also explore your leadership, managerial and overall potential to join the Royal Air Force in this type of role.
Those applicants who successfully pass the filter interview and preliminary checks will spend up to four days at the Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre (OASC). The OASC is divided up in to two parts as follows:
PART 1 OASC
The first part of RAF OASC is the requirement to sit different aptitude tests. Your chosen role/s will determine the types of tests you will have to undertake. The more technical the role, the harder and more complex the tests will be.
In addition to aptitude testing, you will also be required to undergo a medical examination, pass a fitness test and an interview. Only candidates who successfully complete all elements of Part 1 can progress to the second part of the selection process.
PART 2 OASC
Part 2 comprises five situational exercises as follows:
All of the exercises, with the exception of the Individual Problem, require candidates to work in groups of five or six.
You will start your RAF Officer training at the RAF college at Cranwell, which is situated in Lincolnshire. Initial Officer Training (IOT) lasts for 24 weeks and is arduous mix of both academic and practical training which aims to develop your leadership and management abilities. The course will also focus on your fitness and will further develop this so your fitness levels are maintained to the acceptable levels required for RAF Officers.
Once your IOT is complete the next stage of your RAF Officer training will focus on the specific role you applied for and this can last for over 20 weeks. For example the Junior RAF Regiment Officer course lasts for another 26 weeks, which on top of the 24 week IOT equates to almost a full year of training.
The pay in the Royal Air Force does vary substantially depending on the role you are applying for. However, as an example an Air Operations Control Officer starting salary is £27,200 plus benefits during your RAF Officer training. After the training is complete the salary increases to over £33,000 per annum. It is also worth noting that role comes with other benefits such as a MOD pension, six-weeks paid holiday, free gym membership and subsidised food and accommodation.
To become an RAF Officer, you will not need a degree, unless the role specifies it specifically. You will be required to have a good level of education with 5 GCSEs, grade C or higher and 2 A-Levels at grade C. Some specialist roles will require you have certain professional qualifications.
